About
Alexander, our future son
At first, Alexander might
sound like any typical nine-year old boy in the U.S. or around the world. He is a healthy child who loves sports and action games. He
has an independent streak, takes care of himself, and does well in
school. The smile he wears in his photo tugs at your heart strings.
But when Alexander was just
five years old, the Russian courts terminated the parental rights of his birth mother and father due to their abandonment
of him. He had no other family members either able or willing to take him in, and so he was officially given “orphan”
status. Today Alexander lives with dozens of other parentless children in the Ivanovo
International Boarding School, about four
hours north of Moscow.
Conditions there are crowded and bleak, with the children sharing everything from toys to worn-out clothes. Once
the children are no longer toddlers, they are pretty much considered to be unadoptable in their native land. You see, adoption is very rare in Russia.
Here is where the
story brightens!
Shortly before
midnight on New Year’s Eve, the Bird family will be warmly greeting Alexander as he steps off the plane at Phoenix Sky Harbor
Airport. With the permission
of the Russian government, little Alexander and about two dozen other Ivanovo orphans have been selected to participate in
a special two-week-long U.S. host program in January 2005, designed to find each precious child a “forever family.”
The children’s visits have been arranged by Hand-in-Hand International Adoptions and its HUG Program (Hands
Uniting the Globe).
